How the BHIM payment system operates
Direct bank account linking via mobile number
Unlike mobile digital wallets (which require users to store cash in a third-party prepaid wallet), BHIM links directly to your bank account using your SIM card's registered mobile number via device binding.
Virtual Payment Address (VPA / UPI ID)
BHIM creates a unique Virtual Payment Address (e.g., mobilenumber@upi or customname@upi). Users send and receive funds instantly without sharing sensitive bank account numbers or IFSC codes.
Instant settlement via IMPS
Fund transfers happen 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year (including bank holidays and weekends) using the Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) backend.
Two-factor UPI PIN authentication
Every financial transfer is authorized with a 4-digit or 6-digit confidential UPI PIN set directly with the user's debit card.
Key features of the BHIM app
- QR Code Payments: Scan any static or dynamic interoperable UPI QR code (BharatQR / UPI QR) at merchant checkouts.
- Offline Feature Phone Support (
*99#): Users without internet or smartphones can execute fund transfers, balance inquiries, and PIN changes by dialing the USSD code*99#on standard GSM phones. - Multi-Bank Account Management: Link accounts from multiple public, private, regional rural, and cooperative banks inside one unified application.
- Bill Payments (Bharat BillPay / BBPS): Settle electricity, water, gas, broadband, FASTag recharge, and mobile postpaid bills directly.
- Biometric Authentication: Supports fingerprint and facial recognition login on compatible smartphones.
